Was God not self-sufficient, or why did he create humans? By Wolfgang Huste

If a personified God exists, then numerous questions arise for me. What motivated God to create humans? Was he not self-sufficient? Did he seek universal dialogue? What meaningful things can we humans say, or even teach, to an omniscient God? Wouldn’t it make more sense if God had created equal interlocutors, rather than humans, among whom the stupid are more frequently found than the clever? What gave him the impulse to act as he did according to the Bible? Was he previously bored as a solitary God? If so: How long did he previously live without an inhabited world? With the help of his gigantic work of creation, which, according to the Bible, was completed in only seven days, was he seeking entertainment in the sense of general variety, a meaningful activity, or merely distraction because the absolute nothingness that previously prevailed bored him in the long run? If man was created in God’s image, then God would have to be very diverse in terms of his skin color, his specific appearance, and his character. Or does the „image of God“ only include the pheno-level, i.e., the external appearance of humans? But if human character is also reflected in God, then God is Janus-faced, he is both extremely aggressive, downright evil, and on the other hand, also kind, ultimately acting in a very contradictory way. If God reflects himself in us, then his character alternates between the characteristics of mass murderers (I’m thinking not only of Auschwitz, but also of Albert Schweitzer). How does he cope with this? Who stands beside him to point out such avoidable contradictions? And if God is omniscient, can see into the future, but also into the distant past: does he learn from it? If so, why doesn’t he correct his mistakes? Or is all the horror in the world in his interest?

God created humankind, including mass murderers, fascists, genocide victims, racists, exploiters, oppressors, and the social formation of capitalism. Capitalism destroys people, entire societies, and destroys the environment. Did all this have to happen? Who benefits from all this, and for what purpose? What benefit does all this have to offer a God who rules quite solitarily, alone, „over all,“ like a despot, arbitrarily and contradictorily, and who has the power to correct everything for the better in a very short time? What explanatory models do believers construct in their minds so as not to doubt the meaningfulness of his everyday actions? Isn’t it the case that God is abused as a crutch by those who don’t want to face „the world,“ who want to stay out of everything because that’s ultimately more convenient than ridding the world of its numerous evils? Couldn’t these believers at least try it once, with their resources, with like-minded people? What do believers fear when they critically question this and that and ultimately come to the conclusion that one can live better and more peacefully without the figment of God, which bears no relation to reality? Do they fear the general gain in knowledge in the sense of a rational, humanistic enlightenment? What would be to fear in that, what would be the threat? Is humanity not sufficient unto itself, does it absolutely need a God – and if so, why? Why do believers project their ideas of a good, peaceful life onto an imagined spiritual being, onto a figment of the imagination? Wouldn’t it be more realistic and also more meaningful to take action ourselves, alone and in an organized way with like-minded people? What is the argument against taking „the matter“ into one’s own hands, on an international level, to actively and consciously combat the evils of the world, with the goal of creating a world in which everyone can lead a good life, a world without environmental destruction, exploitation, and war?
